Been gone for a minute, now i’m back with the jump off!!

arnie im back

Apologies for the pic but I felt Arnie would soften the blow of my return!!!

For those who have faithfully blogged over the past year I salute you with both hands. I thought I was strong and could hold on forever but no….. nope…. I wilted liked a defrosting rose. Foreign living got me way too excited!

But as I am I strong believer of ‘nunca te rindes’ = never give up, here I am ready to roll on the next film reel and press play!!

So I will give up a quick update on my life since August 2015 (Cringe! has it been almost a year!!) and will be doing random throwback Thursday posts to highlight the best bits.

Sooooo……..

  • I spent August until June 2015 working at Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla.
  • I travelled to Cali, Medellin/Guatape, Cartagena, and Santa Marta as well as 2 trips to Florida, USA to see my lovely family.
  • Started teaching Undergradutes Level 2 English (University curriculum = A1 Level in my opinion).
  • Made some AMAZING friends.
  • Moved into my own ‘cute as a button’ studio flat!! (A la Carrie from Sex and the City).
  • Found a beautiful love in a hopeless place (wouldn’t expect anything else for me!) and yes it’s still going strong!

And most exciting of all……. I’M ABOUT TO DO IT ALL AGAIN!!!!

As me and Barranquilla are absolutely mad about each other we have decided to continue our transatlantic romance and embark on a 2nd year.

Only change will be my place of work which will now be at Universidad del Atlantico, which is one of the best public universities in Barranquilla and the Caribbean coast.

So keep your eyes peeled for Throwback Thursday updates and saddle up for a new year with the loca with the fro a.k.a ME!!

😀 Thanx for having me back!!

ROAD TRIP NUMBER 2 YAAAAAAAAA!!!

This time to celebrate one of the numerous bank holidays (Gracias ‘Assumption Of Mary!!’) in Colombia I decided to join some friends on an impromtu trip to the coastal region on Santa Marta. After booking my tickets and accommodation online (I had cashpoint issues), I started what was going to be a tedious start to my vacation.

DRAMA #1

I arrived at the bus station at 9.35am ready to board my bus at 10am, only to be told MY BUS HAD ALREADY LEFT THE STATION. Apparently because the bus was coming from Medellin, if not passengers are present when they are close to Barranquilla, they are allowed to continue on with the journey…… all togther now…… BULLSHITTTTTTTT!!!

After brief discussion I was told I could board the next bus which would be in 2 hours…… So there I sat in an airconditioned waiting room, where I proceed to be bit to shit by mosquito´s. (Found out later on)

So I got onto the bus which was very spacious and comfortable, not packed either and it was a smooth journey which took just under 2 hours.

DRAMA #2

Got to Santa Marta bus station and managed to share a taxi with a guy who was headed to the same hostel. Pulling up outside it, The Dreamer hostel looked very nice, had loads of character and a present social scene. All the things a good hostel needs.

Once we were checked in and our rooms paid for, one of the reception workers gave us a quick outline of the area and things to do and see. After pointing our local party town Taganga and the famous UNESCO Parque Tayrona, he mentioned their sister hostel ´The Dreamer Palomino´………. LIGHTBULB MOMENT!!!

Silly me, didn´t realise there were 2 OF THEM!!! Following a quick panic pep talk with myself, I spoke to the manager and managed to get my booking moved over to the other Dreamer Hostel, No Problemo!! THANX AGAIN GUYS!!!

The bus to the hostel was an experience in itself, it was so full I had to sit on the stairs!! Here´s a snapshot of my view for 2hours….

THIS IS WHEN MY HOLIDAY TRULY BEGAN!!!

It was the perfect setting to wash away the MADNESS i just went through. The dreamer hostel is located right on the beach so it was just what I needed to enjoy the weekend. After meeting up with friend we enjoyed an amazing meal at the hostel next door (Shout out to Paula!) and spent Sunday fully indulged in beach life. I LOVED IT!!!! Rocked the heck outta my tankini and just generally enjoyed the blessing i was in.

The waves were to rough for me to play with but I must say overall Palomino beach is just the place to enjoy a couple bottles of rum with good food and great company.

Here are some snaps for ya!

Heeeeeeey!! I´m hoooooome :D

After a lovely few days staying at Royal MetroPark Hotel in Bogota with my team (who I miss dearly….) I have moved up to the Caribbean coast, my new home for the next 10 months.

I´m now officially a Language Assistant at Universidad del Norte. Along with new bestie Callum a.k.a DonGringo.

Had the most insane flight to Barranquila where the plane attempted to land then due to strong winds, had to pull up again before coming in for a shaky landing. I think my fingerprints are moulded into the seat handles forever! :D

WE GOT A WELCOME NOTE AT THE AIRPORT, WHOOP WHOOP!!

From the airport, we met our helper/new homie Marian who has been showin us around the city for the past 2 days. We walked around the amazing campus of Uni Norte (which has a cinema, restaurantes and even a hair salon ON CAMPUS!!). We also met some of the team we will be working with inc Sarah from Fulbright. :D

Then later on in the day we were shown to our homestays and given time to settle in.

On Thursday it was a Bank Holiday (19 per year!) so I decided to check out the local shopping centre BuenaVista, was a nice place with various clothes shops and restaurants. Good AirCon too!! I braved a bus there and back which was interesting, I made it there fine however on the way back I thought I was lost and got off to get a taxi, only to find I was a few blocks away!!! NEXT TIME I WILL MAKE IT ALL THE WAY!!

<3´in my new Colombia Bling!

I´m currently living with a lovely Colombian family which consists of a couple, their Daughter and Grandaughter. Although the set -up is ideal to get used to Barranquilla itself, I know i´m going to want more privacy and closer social circle. Decided to try and find an apartment with Callum as we have a similar vibe.

SO IF ANYONE HAS ANY CONTACTS…… HOLLA AT YOUR CHICA!!!

My arrival in COLOMBIA!!! Part 1

So the day of my departure finally arrived and i must say through all the chaos and preparation, it all went quite smoothly!!!

As daunting as long haul flights can be, i was SUPER excited to start my adventures in Colombia with the British Council.

Arrived at Heathrow with plenty of time to spare, check in my case mountain and pay for my extra case.

DSC_2127

Consisted of 2 x 23.3 kg suitcases, hand luggage case and tote style handbag! (Was quite reasonable at $70 for an extra case in comparison to $200 if your case is overweight!!)

After farewell to mama, I went through security and made my way to my gate. As usual, being the magpie that I am, only realized my flight was closing as i’m wandering aimlessly round Boots! MAD DASH to my gate which was miles away I made it to the plane.

After bustling my way through with my insane handbag and rollie-case, mid-way into economy I realized I had ‘Seat Number 7′ and when I looked up at the seat number were in the late 20′s. As I turned around I realized…….

*Drumroll please*

I HAD BEEN UPGRADED TO BUSINESS FIRST!!!! OMG!!!

I scrambled back out of economy like a bat outta hell and settled into my cove ready to lap up the luxuries :D I don’t rightly know how I did it but i’m not going to question fate!

Here are a few sneaky selfies from my flight:

Snoozy Selfie while fully reclined in my cove lounger ❤

Overall it was a very comfy flight with polite service and tasty menu. I thank my lucky stars I can tick ‘FREE FLIGHT UPGRADE’ off my bucket list!!!

THANK YOU UNITED AIRLINES!!!

P.S. Anyone travelling to South America or anywhere in general to be honest, PACK EXTRA CLOTHES IN YOUR HAND LUGGAGE. My main suitcases were delayed by 2 days and if i didn’t have my hand luggage on point, I would have been in fiddle to say the least!!!

Excitement is OVER!! Barranquilla, Let’s do this!!!

Banderas de Barranquilla

Soooooo after months of waiting and waiting I attended my pre departure orientation with anticipation to find out that I have been placed on the Caribbean coast in Barranquilla!!!

Years on perving on Colombia, I must admit that my heart has always leaned towards this culturally expressive region of the country. Between Cartagena and Santa Marta,  The Gabriel Garcia Marquez museum, close the the San Andreas islands and of course HOME OF CARNAVAL :D it couldn’t be more of a dream come true ❤

I will be arriving in the Bogota, 2nd August for orientation then on the 6th of August it’s a quick zoom up to my new destination! As yet I haven’t sorted out permanent accommodation but will be staying with my tutor until I settle in and etc.

I was almost in tears when I found out where I was going. 3 years ago when I made the decision to go to Mexico instead I could have never imagine I would get a 2nd chance at the same dream ❤

Moral of the story: NEVER GIVE UP YOUR DREAMS!

P.S. Any advice or recommendations on life in the ‘Quilla’?? I haven’t even looked at my suitcases yet as the love is yet to grow for the dragging battles ahead but I can imagine it will be a 2 case job plus hand luggage. (Quite an improvement considering I took 4 CASES to Cuba and 2 BIG CASES to Mexico….. ) Bit of a flashpacker i know hahaha

Would be good to hear from peeps! :D Gracias in advance.

COLOMBIA, YA VO…

COLOMBIA, YA VOY!!!!!

Received my placement location today and I’m delighted to say I will be working in the beautiful country of Colombia from July 2014. Over the next few weeks I will get more information about the city and educational establishment I’m going to work in but that’s it for now!

EXCITED IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT!!!

Life-changing month ahead!! Colombia or Mexico

colombia n mexico

Heeelllllloooooo people!!! Yes it’s me! Not the reviewing this time, signing in purely for chatter purposes!

Thought I’d get back to blogging as I’m potentially in for some show stopping news…… (love the showstoppers lol)
If you have followed me over the past 2 years you remember my life took a drastic turn for the worst due to illness and I had to turn down of a teaching job in Honduras. I’m pleased to say that I am fully recovered and eager to get back out into the world and dive into more cultures.

All I love to do is travel, meet people and teach…. it gives me an adrenaline rush just thinking about it.

Well the news is that I am in the process of waiting for a response from the British Council regarding a potential placement abroad in either Colombia or Mexico!! I have dreamt about my next adventure since I landed back in London in 2012 and I’m on tenterhooks at the thought of another take off!!

Depending on how my teaching profile is reviewed I could be placed in either country for a potential 11 months as an English Language Assistant. I have heard so much about the program and what it has to offer. Can’t wait to find out more, inc my new destination!

When I find out, I’ll be sure to fill y’all in!!!
xoxo
